How to Remove Old Addresses From Your Credit Report

Dispute addresses that were never yours, and update the ones that were correctly reported. Old addresses stay when a creditor still reports them, so the fix often starts with the creditor.

Have this ready

  • A current proof of address
  • The bureau report showing the addresses
  • Account numbers for creditors still reporting the old address

Step by step

  1. 1List every address on the report and mark which ones you actually lived at.
  2. 2Gather proof for the correct address, such as a statement or utility bill.
  3. 3Dispute the addresses you never lived at with each bureau that shows them.
  4. 4Contact any creditor still reporting an old address and ask them to update it.
  5. 5Update your address with banks, cards and utilities, because new reporting follows the creditor's record.
  6. 6Re-check the report after the response window to confirm the change.
  7. 7If an address you never lived at stays, escalate in writing and mention possible identity theft.
Disputing is free. Do not accept an offer to remove addresses for a fee, which is a standard credit repair pitch that does nothing extra.

Common questions

Will removing an old address raise my score?+

Usually not directly. It matters because lenders check identity and because an unknown address can signal fraud.

Why does an address I never lived at appear?+

It can come from a creditor's record, a data broker or a fraudster's application. Dispute it and check for accounts you do not recognise.

Do all bureaus show the same addresses?+

No. Each file is maintained separately, so dispute with each bureau individually.
