How to Dispute an Error on Your Credit Report
Dispute in writing with the bureau that shows the error, and separately with the company that reported it. Send facts and copies, keep the tracking, and expect a written response within the period your country's law sets.
Have this ready
- The credit report showing the item
- Proof of your version, such as statements or payoff letters
- The bureau's dispute address
Step by step
- 1Mark the exact item on the report: creditor, account number, balance and the date it appeared.
- 2Write a short dispute letter stating what is wrong and what you believe is correct.
- 3Attach copies of the report page circled plus any statements or letters that prove your version.
- 4Send it with tracking or through the bureau's online dispute form and keep the confirmation.
- 5Send the same pack to the creditor, because they can correct the source data directly.
- 6Calendar the response window and follow up once if nothing arrives.
- 7If the item stays and you believe it is accurate, ask the creditor for a goodwill correction in writing instead.

Common questions
Can a bureau delete accurate information?+
No. Accurate negative information stays for the period the law allows. Disputes are for errors, not for removing true records.
Should I use a credit repair company?+
You can do everything they do yourself for free. If you hire one, check the regulator's rules on fees and contracts first.
What if the same error appears on two reports?+
Dispute with each bureau separately. A correction at one does not automatically update the others.
