How to Send a Cease and Desist Letter Yourself

A cease and desist is a written demand to stop a specific behaviour, sent with proof of delivery. You can write it yourself; keep it factual, name the conduct and the date, and state what you want to happen.

Have this ready

  • A dated record of the conduct
  • The recipient's correct address
  • Proof of delivery option, such as tracked post

Step by step

  1. 1Write down the behaviour, with dates, messages and screenshots, in order.
  2. 2Decide exactly what must stop, such as contact, publishing or using your name.
  3. 3Write a short letter: who you are, what happened, what must stop, and by when.
  4. 4State that you are keeping records and will consider further steps if it continues.
  5. 5Send it by a method with proof of delivery and keep the receipt and a copy.
  6. 6Do not make threats you cannot carry out or claim to be a lawyer.
  7. 7If the conduct continues or involves threats, speak to a local legal aid service or a lawyer.
This is information, not legal advice. If you are being threatened or harassed, contact local police or a legal aid service rather than relying on a letter alone.

I can walk you through it in a Magic Box, show you the exact clicks, or do it with you and keep the recording. You log in yourself; I never see your password.

Common questions

Does a cease and desist letter have legal force?+

It is a formal demand and creates a record, not a court order. Enforcement comes from a court or regulator.

Can I email it?+

You can, but tracked post or a signed delivery method is stronger evidence that it arrived.

Should I name a deadline?+

Yes. A clear date makes it easier to show the conduct continued after you objected.
