How to Dispute a Credit Card Charge and Win the Paper Trail

Contact the merchant in writing first, then file a dispute with your card issuer inside the deadline. Card rules generally protect you only when you can show what you ordered, what arrived and what you asked for.

Have this ready

  • Receipt or order confirmation
  • Your written complaint to the merchant
  • Dates of purchase, delivery and complaint

Step by step

  1. 1Collect the receipt, the order confirmation, the product description and any messages with the merchant.
  2. 2Write to the merchant once, state the problem and the outcome you want, and give a short deadline.
  3. 3If that fails, open a dispute through your card issuer's app or phone line; do not use a paid dispute service.
  4. 4Describe the problem in facts: what you paid for, what you received, and what the merchant said when you complained.
  5. 5Upload the evidence, keep the case reference and note the provisional credit date.
  6. 6Respond to any request for more information before the deadline, because unanswered disputes are closed against you.
  7. 7Check the final decision in writing and ask for the reason if the dispute is refused.
Your bank will never ask for your full card number, PIN or a one-time code to process a dispute. Anyone who does is impersonating the bank.

Common questions

How long do I have to dispute a charge?+

Deadlines depend on the card network and your country, and they usually run from the statement date or from when you noticed the problem. File as soon as the merchant stops responding rather than waiting.

Should I dispute before contacting the merchant?+

Contact the merchant first in writing. Issuers ask whether you tried, and a clear written complaint makes the dispute faster.

Can I dispute a charge for a service I did not receive?+

Usually yes, if you can show you paid and the service was not delivered. Keep the booking confirmation and any cancellation or no-show evidence.
