How to Close an Old Email Account Without Losing Your Accounts
Before deleting, move every account that uses the old address to a new one and export what you want to keep. A deleted mailbox can be recycled, and that is how old logins get stolen.
Have this ready
- A new email address you control
- The old account's password and recovery access
- A list of important services to move first
Step by step
- 1Search the old mailbox for the words signup, welcome, receipt and verify to find every service using it.
- 2Change the email address on banking, government, work and payment accounts first.
- 3Change it on social, shopping and subscription accounts, or close the ones you no longer use.
- 4Export contacts, receipts, attachments and anything you need, then check the export opens.
- 5Set an auto-reply telling real contacts your new address for a few weeks before closing.
- 6Close the account through the provider's own deletion route rather than just abandoning it.
- 7Keep a note of what was closed, and check the new address for a month for anything missed.
Want it done with you?
I can walk you through it in a Magic Box, show you the exact clicks, or do it with you and keep the recording. You log in yourself; I never see your password.
Common questions
Does the provider delete everything immediately?+
Usually there is a grace period and then deletion. Ask about the window in case you need to reverse it.
Can I keep the address but stop using it?+
You can, as long as you keep control and sign in occasionally. Providers close inactive accounts after long periods.
What about accounts I cannot change?+
Contact support and ask them to update the address, or close the account. Keep a list of the ones you left behind.
