How to Check Whether an Email Address Is Real
Check the syntax, confirm the domain has mail servers, then use a verification service or a real send to judge whether the mailbox exists. No method gives a certain answer for every provider.
Have this ready
- The address list
- Access to a DNS lookup tool
- Access to bounce reporting in your sending tool
Step by step
- 1Check the address format and look for typos in the domain, which cause most bounces.
- 2Look up the domain's MX records to confirm it can receive mail at all.
- 3Check whether the domain is disposable or a known role address such as info@ or support@.
- 4Run the address through a verification tool that reports syntax, MX, disposable, role and catch-all status.
- 5Treat catch-all domains as unknown rather than valid, since servers accept mail for any name.
- 6For important contacts, send a low-risk first message and watch for a hard bounce.
- 7Remove hard bounces immediately so they do not damage sending reputation.
Want it done with you?
I can walk you through it in a Magic Box, show you the exact clicks, or do it with you and keep the recording. You log in yourself; I never see your password.
Common questions
Can verification be perfect?+
No. Catch-all servers and greylisting mean some real addresses look invalid and some invalid ones pass. Treat results as risk levels.
What is a catch-all domain?+
A server that accepts mail for any address at that domain, so verification cannot tell whether a specific person exists.
Is it legal to verify a list I bought?+
Verification is not consent. Check the anti-spam law for the country of the recipient before sending anything.
