How to Add Google Analytics to Your Website Correctly

Create a GA4 property, install the tag once in a place that loads on every page, and verify with realtime reports. Installing it twice double-counts every visit.

Have this ready

  • A GA4 property and measurement ID
  • Access to edit the site's head or tag manager
  • A consent approach if required in your market

Step by step

  1. 1Create a GA4 property and a web data stream for the exact domain, including www or non-www as used.
  2. 2Copy the measurement ID and install the tag once, ideally through your site's layout or a tag manager.
  3. 3If your site already has another analytics tag, remove the duplicate rather than adding a second copy.
  4. 4Open the realtime report and confirm your own visit appears.
  5. 5Mark key actions as conversions, such as signup, checkout start and purchase.
  6. 6Add your consent banner settings before collecting data where the law requires consent.
  7. 7Set a data retention period and an internal note on who owns the property.
Never send personal data such as email addresses or names to analytics. That breaches the platform's terms and data protection law in many countries.

Want it done with you?

I can walk you through it in a Magic Box, show you the exact clicks, or do it with you and keep the recording. You log in yourself; I never see your password.

Common questions

Why are my numbers different from another tool?+

Blockers, consent choices and different attribution rules all change counts. Small differences are normal; large gaps mean a broken tag.

Do I need a cookie banner?+

In the EU and UK, analytics cookies generally need consent. Check the rules for your visitors, not just your own country.

Can I track a single-page app?+

Yes, with the enhanced measurement setting or manual page view events on route changes.
